24 HOUR ESOPHAGEAL PH STUDY

24 Hour Esophageal pH Study

The 24-hour esophageal pH test is performed to measure the pH or amount of acid that flows into the esophagus from the stomach during a 24-hour period.

Our area of clinical expertise include:

Indications:

❖ In patients with heartburn, especially those with poor response to treatment.
❖ Uncommon symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), such as chest pain, chronic cough, and asthma
❖ Before surgical or endoscopic anti reflux intervention
❖ Assessment of efficacy of surgical & endoscopic therapy for acid reflux

Pre-procedure preparation:

This test can be performed on or off acid suppressing medications depending on the indication of the test. Usually acid suppressing medications are stopped. Stop proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole, rabeprazole, omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, dexlansoprazole) 7 days, H2 receptors antagonists (ranitidine, famotidine etc.) 2 days and antacid syrups like Gelusil, Mucaine gel, etc. 6-12 hours prior to the procedure. Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to the procedures. Change the timing of your anti-diabetic medication accordingly.

Procedure:

After numbing one of the nostrils, a thin, small tube with an acid sensor on its tip is gently passed through it, down the esophagus, and positioned about 5 cm. above the lower esophageal sphincter. The tube is fastened to the side of your face with clear tape. The end of the tube that comes out your nose is attached to a portable recorder that is worn on your belt or over your shoulder. The recorder has several buttons on it that you will press to mark certain events. The tube is kept in place for 24 hours.

During the procedure:

Follow your usual daily routine. Eat normal diet what you have been consuming daily. Press the buttons to record symptoms and events like eating, taking other daily medications, lying down or standing up as explained to you at the beginning of the procedure.

Complications:
None except slight discomfort of carrying the small machine for 24 hrs.
